As well as the key science objectives, this expedition presents a fantastic opportunity to educate and communicate the natural history of the Galápagos Islands like never before. The expedition is a historical moment for science, conservation and exploration of our oceans in the context of Galápagos and its new marine protected areas, among international audiences, but also communities in Ecuador and right here, in the Galápagos Islands.
Through this website, blog posts, social media channels, new releases, school outreach, and scientific education events in the Galápagos, we hope to:
- generate interest and excitement around the expedition and its scientific objectives
- emphasize what this means for conservation in Galápagos
- inspire the scientific community to do further ocean research in Galápagos
- show how the cruise contributes to understanding of sustainability issues in other ocean regions

Between the numerous institutions and foundations involved, we will ensure the impact of this expedition has a global reach. Our partnership with the Charles Darwin Foundation, Galápagos National Park Directorate and INOCAR will ensure that the science on board is being done carefully and sustainably to prevent any detrimental impact to the ecosystems of the Galápagos Platform. These partnerships are also key to our engagement activities with the local community.
We are working with a marine science education program to educate about the effects on hydrostatic pressure in very deep parts of our oceans. And we will be sharing our knowledge and experience from the expedition with the local Galápagos community at the end of the cruise to emphasize the importance of their islands and seafloor, the importance of marine conservation efforts, and bring marine science closer to the community.

Being part of a research expedition at sea is exciting, exhausting and exhilarating. We want to share the lives and experiences of our scientists and observers at sea, share the incredible science being undertaken, and share the incredible technology that is allowing us to reach the greatest depths of the Galápagos Platform. Through this effort, we hope to encourage future generations of marine explorers, scientists, conservationists and educators focused on the Galápagos and elsewhere in our oceans.
